While on a trip to Japan, Pierre Bonnefille discovered ‘Furoshiki’, the traditional Japanese art of wrapping, dating back to the Nara period (eighth century). The ancient art from ‘Furoshiki’ brings together tissue-folding techniques to wrap gifts, personal effects and everyday objects.

Upon his return, Pierre Bonnefille went back to ‘Furoshiki’, gestures that fascinate him and which will be reproduced for his ‘Furoshiki Drawings’. Inspired by the gracious gestures of Japanese folding techniques, Pierre Bonnefille captures the movement in order to apply to paper, the textures of bronze and of carbon, with the help of polished steel spatulas.

The generous and opaque texture, adapts with precision with the mastered movement of the artist, who composes in two dimensions the memory of a ritual in three dimensions.
